Private healthcare company Netcare has auctioned off two of its disused hospitals in Johannesburg after opening its flagship facility in Alberton earlier this year.

Netcare’s Union and Clinton hospitals, both located south of Johannesburg, have served the surrounding community for approximately 20 years. Both will now be auctioned separately to the highest bidders on November 23 by Broll Auctions and Sales.

The Disused Netcare Union Hospital at 47 Clinton Road in Alberton once housed state-of-the-art facilities and technology, operating as a multidisciplinary medical facility. The 12,024 m² building had more than 200 beds and included cardiac intensive care units and catheterization laboratories. The hospital also had an active helicopter landing pad, as well as a 24-hour accident and emergency unit.

Netcare is smaller Clinton Hospital, located a few hundred meters from the Union Facility, will also be auctioned. The 9,247 m² hospital housed 165 beds and was renowned for its specialized mother-child services.

“These multi-story compartmentalized buildings are ideal for a residential/mixed-use conversion, storage facility or medical facility,” said Jayson-Lee Collins, director of sales at Broll Auctions and Sales.

“Properties are priced to sell, and we invite investors, developers and owner occupiers to view by appointment.”

Both hospitals have since been decommissioned and merged with Netcare’s Alberton Hospital, which was officially handed over to the private healthcare group in February 2022.

Netcare Alberton Hospital opened in April, with 427 beds including 135 critical care and critical care beds. It is one of only three private sector hospitals equipped to handle the highest level of trauma, with accreditation from the South African Trauma Society.

The new hospital includes two emergency helipads, a rooftop solar photovoltaic power plant that generates 2 GWh of electricity per year, and a gray water recycling system that is expected to reduce water consumption by 60% to 70%.

“This renewable solar energy will significantly alleviate the hospital’s use of fossil fuel-based energy resources while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, being the most ambitious photovoltaic system installed in the Group’s operations to date. .” says André NortjeNational Environmental Sustainability Manager at Netcare.

It also has an attenuation basin that can capture rainwater, as well as four boreholes, all of which can be reinjected into the treatment plant and reused within the installation.

“If needed, we have even planned black water treatment with minimal adjustment of the sewage treatment plant as one of the future design adjustment features of the hospital,” Nortjé added.

The construction of Netcare Alberton Hospital employed more than 800 locals, according to the private healthcare group, while more than 90 local businesses were used and more than R200 million was spent on businesses and local suppliers.
