JOHANNESBURG — MetroFM news anchor Pearl Ntombifuthi Shongwe has died.

His family confirmed his “premature death” with “great sadness” on Tuesday.

“She died in her sleep,” family spokesman Khehla Tshabalala said in a statement.

The family say Shongwe (35) died at her home in Johannesburg.

Shongwe’s family has made a request to be able to mourn privately during this difficult time.

“Our daughter was a famous radio and television host. Her presence will live on in our hearts forever,” the family added in a statement.

Shongwe’s broadcasting career began at YFM in 2010.

She then worked at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) – where she started as a sports presenter.

The public broadcaster has since sent words of comfort to the Shongwe family.

“The SABC has learned from the family of Pearl Shongwe that she has sadly passed away. The SABC sends its deepest condolences to the Shongwe family.”

News of Shongwe’s passing began circulating on social media platforms on Tuesday afternoon, with many expressing shock.
