SC surfers John Mel and Autumn Hays prepare for action in South Africa

Two Santa Cruz surfers, John Mel and Autumn Hays, are set to compete in the World Surf League’s Ballito Pro, Challenger Series event #3, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

A day off was called Sunday, the opening day of the week-long competition window.

Mel takes on No. 15 Deivid Silva of Brazil, No. 19 Mihimana Braye of French Polynesia and No. 44 Te Kehukehu Butler of New Zealand in round 5 of the 96 round when the action begins. Mel makes his CS debut.

Hays, No. 68 in the CS Women’s Rankings, opens against No. 9 Macy Callaghan of Australia, No. 9 Zahli Kelly of Australia and No. 53 Pauline Ado of France in Round 5 of the Round of 64.

Hays skipped the Boost Mobile Gold Coast Pro season opener and placed 33rd and earned 700 points at the second event, the GWM Sydney Surf Pro. Both took place in Australia in May.

At the end of the eight-event season, the top 10 ranked men and women will automatically qualify for the 2023 Championship Tour.

Beach volleyball

Denver Open: Santa Cruz’s Cash Adamsen and Lincoln’s beach volleyball teammate Cole Aidnik went 2-1 in qualifying at the AVP Tour Series Denver Open on Friday.

Adamsen and Aidnik defeated Hayden Frear of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Anthony Worthington of Salt Lake City 21-12, 21-18 and Josue Castillo of Boston and Oren Zyndorf of Fair Lawn, NJ, 21-17, 21-19 , before losing to Travis Mewhirter of Hermosa Beach and John-Michael Plummer of Fort Myers, Fla., 16-21, 21-17, 15-8.

Santa Cruz’s Wyatt Harrison and San Diego’s Bryce Mayer went 1-1. They beat Daniel Stevens of Santa Clara and Jordon Dyer of Santa Barbara 22-20, 21-18 and lost to Jon Mesko of Hermosa Beach and Gabriel Ospina of Encinitas 21-16, 18-21, 15-10.

United States Women’s Senior Amateur Qualifiers: Santa Cruz’s Melissa Spencer shot 16 over par 88 and missed the cut during US senior amateur qualifying at Woodbridge Golf & Country Club on Thursday.

The seven lowest scorers will advance to the 60th United States Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at the Anchorage Golf Course in Alaska from July 30-August 21. 4.

Joy Robinson of Pebble Beach and Lynne Cowan of Rocklin shot 4 of 76 to share medal honors. Christy Atencio (77) of Reno, Nevada, Andrea Kroll (78) of Pleasanton, Lydia Shell (78) of Danville, Itsuko Moridaira (78) of Green Valley and Jennifer Douglas (79) of Granite Bay also advanced.
