South Africa: ANC Ethekwini – Ex-mayor Zandile Gumede to face Thabani Nyawose for top job in weekend elections

Ex-mayor Zandile Gumede will be in the dock as a co-defendant in a trial for fraud and corruption which will begin in July. But this weekend she is set to take on eThekwini Municipality Chairman Thabani Nyawose at the regional ANC eThekwini crunch conference this weekend – as part of the run-up to the ruling party’s national elective conference in December 2022.

The build-up to the highly anticipated eThekwini ANC conference has been characterized by threats of legal action, excitement and accusations of wrongdoing from the two opposing factions.

But eThekwini Municipality President Thabani Nyawose and his Renew, Revive and Unite (RRU) faction had a slight advantage over former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede and his Unity faction, ahead with 54 nominations from branch out of the latter’s 36 branch appointments.

eThekwini is the largest ANC region nationally, with over 111 branches and over 100,000 members. However, some of these branches were disqualified from attending the next regional conference for failing to achieve quorum and hold general branch meetings.
