“I spent €300 on a tasting menu at one of the top 25 restaurants in the world”

Are you a saver or a spender?

I consider that I have a balance between the two. However, I am mostly a saver and have always had the mentality of having enough savings for a rainy day.

Do you shop around for better value?

Yes. While I’m happy to spend money on high quality items, I don’t like paying more for the same. For purchases such as insurance, I will always shop around and do research.

What was your most extravagant purchase and how much did it cost?

My most extravagant purchase was on a work trip to Cape Town. A few of us went to one of the top 25 restaurants in the world and ordered an 11-course tasting menu. It was €300 per person, but I have to say it was a unique and amazing experience.

What purchase have you made that you consider to be the best value?

Probably my car, an Opel Insignia. I’ve had it for four years and luckily I haven’t had any problems with it.

How did you prefer to shop during the Covid-19 restrictions – online or local?

I like both, but I would always strive to buy local. For Christmas just past, I organized gift baskets for the office and everything in them was locally sourced.

Do you negotiate prices?

In business, and having worked in sales, I have a lot of negotiation experience, but personally, I don’t have any.

How has the Covid-19 crisis changed your consumption habits?

The pandemic has changed my spending habits a lot. I didn’t buy a lot of business clothes as my meetings moved online, so my wardrobe changed to a more casual look. Today, my expenses go to DIY and household appliances.

Do you invest in stocks?

No, I wouldn’t have much interest.

Cash or card?

Card – I like convenience!

What’s the last thing you bought and was it good value?

Without a doubt, my Barbour jacket. It was good value, great quality and will last a lifetime.

Have you ever managed to save for a relatively large purchase?

I always saved when buying a new car and when we built our house, we were able to save.

Have you ever lost money?

No, I was very lucky!

Are you a gambler and if so, have you ever won a jackpot?

I’m not a gambler, but a few years ago I won a big race win – bet 10 each way and won €300.

Is money important to you?

Money is not my primary motivation and never has been. It’s important, however, to have enough money so I don’t have to worry, and I always want to have enough to support others where I can.

How much money do you have on you now?

Small change which is probably around €3 – I use my card for everything!
