Environmental and Social Governance Manager Wanted

Independent Power Producer Globeleq has a vacancy for an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Officer who will be based in London, UK, or Cape Town, South Africa.

Globeleq is looking for a valuable addition to the ESG team who can lead and manage the planning and implementation of ESG projects, as well as provide technical guidance and portfolio support.

The ESG Manager will be expected to work closely with the Business Development, Engineering & Construction, and Operations teams to oversee project development and ensure the process is executed in accordance with Globeleq policies, social best practices and the international environment.

Environmental, social and governance vacancy rresponsibilities:

Projects in development and acquisition

  • Screen and provide guidance and feedback on ESG issues associated with new prospects, in particular to reflect Globeleq’s HSESS policies.
  • Take ownership and provide support to project developers on all ESG matters while operating within a well-defined strategy and operational framework.
  • Help mitigate potential risks for complex new projects by undertaking due diligence, coordinating the development of environmental and social impact assessments and defining ESG risk mitigation strategies.
  • Source and manage advisors for ESG due diligence, impact assessments and other related activities/assessments as needed.
  • Support the development of project-specific ESG management plans, monitoring programs, selection of project-specific ESG personnel, training and/or other support required for the effective implementation of GQ standards on projects.
  • Act as the main point of contact for lenders interested in the ESG aspects of their project finance loans. Coordinate and ensure consistency in the delivery of monitoring reports to lenders.

Projects under construction

  • Act as the ESG point of contact for engineering, construction and legal teams throughout contract negotiation and all construction activities related to ESG risks and their mitigation.
  • Review the performance of construction personnel, sub-contractors and site crews in accordance with Globeleq HSESS policies and standards, and lead or modify to ensure best practices are adhered to throughout the construction site and in areas of influence.

Support the operations team and asset management

  • According to international environmental (and social) best practice so that it is fully compliant with all relevant corporate and local standards and Globeleq’s HSESS policies. Provide support and assistance to local operational teams for all environmental issues.
  • Monitor and report on the environmental activities and performance of the Company and its operating facilities.
  • Play a lead role in coordinating the company’s operational environmental teams and guiding improvements and performance in documentation and physical actions through monthly forums, annual meetings and knowledge sharing activities.

Support the MD ESSG

  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of Globeleq’s HSESS integrated management system, including standard plans and procedures and update technical guidelines that will lead to best practices.
  • Support the climate change team to help the company achieve its ambitions towards a low carbon future by contributing to the management and monitoring of its carbon strategy, carbon footprint and all tools, processes and decisions associates.
  • Provide support for the development of communication tools (e.g. annual sustainability report) to highlight the company’s ESG achievements.

Experience and qualifications

  • Advanced university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, preferably energy, energy, environmental engineering or environmental sciences, or alternatively development studies / development finance.
  • At least 6 years of work experience in a related field, preferably in infrastructure development, E&S consultancy, development finance, banking or investment industry.
  • A solid experience in the environmental discipline is an advantage.
  • Ability to travel up to 40 days per year, sometimes on short notice.

Technical capabilities

  • Familiarity with the application of IFC Performance Standards to investments is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of energy, infrastructure development, environmental and social issues as they apply to Globeleq’s business.
  • Provide an overview of the challenges associated with implementing environmental and social improvements in infrastructure projects, particularly as they relate to businesses in Africa.
  • Significant exposure to the power generation industry and exposure to related ESG topics is an advantage.
  • Experience in international operations to include applicable regulatory requirements and cultural differences would be an advantage. Display knowledge of ESG standards (including IFC) and their application throughout development, construction and operational life cycle.
