South Africa aim to qualify for 2023 Men’s World Cup of Hockey

Matt Guise-Brown of Hampstead & Westminster has been selected for South Africa’s bid to qualify for the 2023 Men’s World Cup.

The African Cup of Nations of Hockey takes place in Accra, Ghana from January 17-23. The team that finishes first in the tournament will advance to the World Cup in India in January 2023.

For South Africa, this represents an opportunity to build on the momentum of the Tokyo Olympics, where a victory over Germany propelled South Africa into the world top 10 for the first time.

They currently sit in 12th place, but the continental centerpiece will give them the opportunity to return to the top 10.

With the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations very close, the challenge resulting from the various travel restrictions led an updated South African squad to win the African Champions Cup .

Sihle Ngubane and Connor Beauchamp will have the opportunity to win their first national team cap, while Richard Pautz and Ignatius Malgraff are also recalled to the squad.

The South Africans are seven-time champions, and while they will be the favorites to win the title, Egypt and host Ghana will face a tall order.

The team, including the reserves, will start a camp at North West University before leaving for Ghana.
