India and South Africa are set to meet in the three-game Test Series, with the first game starting this Sunday at Centurion’s SuperSport Park. The Indian team has never won a Test Series in South Africa and the upcoming series is their eighth Rainbow Nation tour. The Indian team may not have managed to win a series in South Africa, but there were many memorable performances by the touring team against the Proteas. From S Sreesanth’s masterclass in 2006 to Jasprit Bumrah’s emergence in Test cricket in 2018, India has witnessed superb bowling performances in South Africa.
Ahead of India’s highly anticipated eighth tour of South Africa, let’s take a look at the top 5 performances of Indian bowlers:
Sreesanth – 5/40 & 3/59 Johannesburg, 2006
No one can forget the brilliance of S Sreesanth in 2006 when India claimed its first Test victory in South Africa. The Indian team led by Rahul Dravid beat South Africa by 123 points in the series opener at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. After scoring 249 points in the opening innings, the visitors regrouped the Proteas for 84 points thanks to a top-notch bowling performance from Sreesanth who picked 5 wickets in the opening innings followed by three wickets in the second.
Jasprit Bumrah – 5/54 & 2/57 Johannesburg, 2018
Even after a good overall performance on the pitch, India lost the first two Tests of the three-match series. It was India’s first loss in the Test Series after the 2014/15 Australian tour. However, India managed to win the last game of the series. Jasprit Bumrah, who was playing his first round of tests, had chosen 7 wickets in the test, including a transport of five wickets in the first rounds.
It was Bumrah’s first five-wicket run in tryout cricket and since then he has played 24 practice matches and picked up 101 wickets. The playmaker will also spearhead India’s bowling attack in the upcoming round.
Harbhajan Singh – 4/10 & 2/70 Durban, 2010
On the 2010 tour of South Africa, Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh was at his best. The off-spinner picked 4 wickets giving just 10 points in the opening innings of the second test game of the three-game series. South Africa were knocked out by 131 points in the opening innings and they scored just 215 points in the second inning in their pursuit of 302. India won the test match by 87 points and it s This was his second victory in South Africa. Harbhajan also picked two wickets in the second inning and all of his wickets arrived at crucial times.
Harbhajan Singh also had the best bowling tricks of an Indian bowler in South Africa when he came back with the numbers of 7/120 in the opening innings of the third Test of the same series.
Anil Kumble – 2/60 & 6/53 Johannesburg, 1992
It was the first Test tour from India to South Africa and the first Test ended in a draw. The second test also ended in a draw, but Anil Kumble showed some of his skill with the ball on a pitch for fast bowling. Kumble picked six wickets in the second set and also two in the first.
It was also the first round of testing for South Africa at home after the ban was lifted by ICC.
Javagal Srinath – 6/76 & 2/28 Port Elizabeth, 2001
After losing the series opener in Bloemfontein, the Indian team managed to save the second round of the series in Port Elizabeth. Herschelle Gibbs scored 196 points in the second test, but this game is also known for India’s 6/76 magic spell Javagal Srinath which kept India’s hope of pulling the streak alive. Srinath also picked two wickets in the second inning, but the game ended in a draw.
