Hyatt House launched its latest development in Sandton, Johannesburg on Tuesday, marking the brand’s first move to an apartment hotel in Africa.

The Hyatt Hotels Corporation, founded over 60 years ago, owns nearly 2,000 properties in more than 70 countries on six continents. The multinational hospitality giant recently completed the acquisition of Apple Leisure Group (ALG), doubling its global presence in hotel complexes and expanding into new European markets.

And while the AGL deal, with its profitable European access, made headlines on Tuesday, Hyatt also unveiled a first for its African operations in Johannesburg.

Hyatt was already present in South Africa, with its luxury hotel brand Hyatt Regency in Cape Town and Johannesburg, as well as seaside resorts at Hermanus and Plettenberg Bay. But the company’s extended stay brand, Hyatt House, launched exactly a decade ago, has disappeared from South Africa and the continent.

Hyatt House offers aparthotels – or aparthotels – which offer traditional hotel rooms and residential suites. These suites come with kitchens, workspaces, spacious bedrooms, and bathrooms, suitable for extended stays and guests needing extra levels of comfort and convenience.

“We all understand that the past two years have been extremely difficult for the hospitality industry, but in light of the challenges we are more than ever excited about the rebound,” hotel manager Atef Soliman told Business Insider South Africa.

“Over the past few months there has been a positive trend around the hospitality industry and tourism in general, customers want to go back to what they once enjoyed. The arrival of the Hyatt House brand in South Africa South will offer clients the perfect transition between working from home and returning to the new normal of a flexible work environment. “
