THREE men have been arrested for attempted murder after an officer from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) was injured in a shootout with gunmen in central Johannesburg on Sunday.

JMPD Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the undercover unit officer was shot in the left leg.

“Officers arrested three male suspects and recovered a gun. None of the suspects were injured and they will be charged at Johannesburg Central Police Station with attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, ”Minnaar said.

In a separate incident, Gauteng Police said a 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly running over a policeman at a roadblock in Khutsong in the West Rand.

The man reportedly failed to stop at the roadblock and collided with Warrant Officer Jan Christoffel Esterhuysen.

“It is reported that a 20-year-old driver did not stop at the roadblock, hitting a stationary vehicle and Warrant Officer Esterhuysen controlling traffic,” said Brigadier Brenda Muridili.

“The suspect attempted to flee the scene but other operatives managed to arrest him and it was determined that he was drunk. WO Esterhuysen was rushed to hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries, ”said Muridili.

“Warrant Officer Esterhuysen was stationed at the Fochville Visible Police Unit. He was 27 years of loyal service to the South African police.

She said Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the family and appreciated Warrant Officer Esterhuysen’s contribution to the police during his years of service.
