The City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Mpho Moerane, says he is available to serve the economic center of the continent as the new mayor.
The ANC regional executive committee in Johannesburg has approved Moerane as the party’s candidate for mayor, which will be filled for the second time in two months. It was left vacant following the sudden death of Jolidee Matongo, who was killed in a car crash on the Golden Highway earlier this month.
Moerane was unanimously approved at a committee meeting on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 after receiving advice from ANC legal teams in Johannesburg and the provincial department of Cogta.
Moerane plans to provide services for Johannesburg
Talk to eNCA Mpho Moerane said on Wednesday he was ready to serve in honor of Matongo and the people of Johannesburg. Moerane told the broadcaster that after taking advantage of the post of mayor, people, including his family, feared he would accept it.
“I told them I will do it in honor of Matongo. I want to continue with what he started, which is what the former mayor Makhubo started to accelerate the delivery of services in the city. Where we cannot put tap water, we will put water tanks, ”Moerane said.
Matongo’s death came just over a month after taking office. At the time, he had taken over Geoff Makhubo, himself who died in July, succumbing to COVID-19.
