For those who were in the ’80s, it seems everyone remembers the day it snowed, and it snowed, in Johannesburg in 1981 – 40 years ago today, September 11th. (Technically it also snowed on 10.) The photos on this page were taken that day by AGI ORFANOS, who was in high school at the time, at St John’s College in Houghton.
Also in the St John’s area that day was St Mary’s pupil Jacqueline Groenewald, who surely has one of the most romantic memories of that fairytale day, when the town was turned into a white winter wonderland.
Jacqueline says: “This is the day I met Peter Groenewald 40 years ago !!! Hats off, I can’t believe it !!! Our two fathers taught in St John’s. I left school early because it was snowing !!! and I took the bus back from St Mary’s as usual. I was locked out of the house and sadly sitting on the sidewalk when he spotted me from his balcony… and the rest as they say is history !!! “
In six years, Jax and Peter got married and they’ve never looked back.
What a beautiful day to fall in love. Here are more photos of Agi Orfanos:
There were other rare snowfalls in Johannesburg – in May 1956, August 1962, June 1964, June 28, 2007 and August 7, 2012.
