Rising Sky Prices: What Consumers Can Do

Most customers will see a Sky price increase once a year, usually taking effect on April 1. Sky is one of the few broadband providers that does not include significant annual price increases in their terms and conditions. It is therefore likely that if Sky increases your monthly rate, you may be eligible to break your contract and switch to a new broadband contract.

The start of the new financial year is usually when UK broadband service providers announce price increases, but if you are will see an increase in Sky prices, the supplier must notify you at least 30 days in advance.

There are two reasons why you might see an increase in the Sky price:

  1. Sky increases the price of certain products for new or existing customers.
  2. Your original contract has expired and your new monthly price will increase from now on.

In either case, you will receive a notification from Sky 30 days before the price increase takes effect.

If Sky plans to increase the price of any of its products, they will communicate this increase to you by email or post. Since Sky offers a number of different services, ranging from TV and calling plans to broadband and mobile plans, you may or may not be affected by the latest round of price hikes. It all depends on the services you subscribe to.

End of contract notifications

Broadband providers are now required to notify their customers of the end of their initial contracts. After the initial 12, 18 or 24 month contract, broadband prices often increase dramatically. Suppliers relied on customers who continued to pay the higher price because they had not noticed the increase.

You will now receive a communication from your supplier detailing the end of your contract and what your new monthly charges are, as well as other options that may be better for you.

Millions of Sky customers will see their bills rise as the broadband and television service provider announces its latest round of price hikes. This series of Sky price increases will come into effect from April 1, 2021 for broadband and TV customers, and from May 1 for fixed-line customers.

The amount by which your Sky bill will increase will depend on the number of Sky services you subscribe to and the package you have. In addition, since the price increase is greater than the annual inflation, you can cancel your contract without penalty and switch suppliers.

If you’re an existing customer, you should receive notification of Sky’s next price increase in the next few weeks – between February 17 and March 27 – depending on when you originally signed up for Sky.

New customers who sign up for Sky from February 17 will be notified of the new prices that go into effect in April. Therefore, they’ll see these new charges from their April bill date (regardless of which day of the month they set it up for).

Nearly a million Sky subscribers could see their annual bill rise to as much as £ 72 at a time when many household budgets are already depleted.

Sky Broadband Essential customers will see the biggest increase, with prices increasing by more than 13% from £ 22 per month to £ 25 per month.

Price hikes have become an unwanted spring tradition, and that hike lands before the ink barely dries up on recent increases from Virgin Media and BT.

Sky’s broadband and TV price hikes don’t start until April 1, so you have plenty of time to avoid these changes if you’re not happy.

Broadband customers who are still within their minimum contract term can leave without penalty if they act within 30 days of receiving notification.

For those currently without a contract, it is even more important to consider your options as you will likely be able to save £ 90 per year by switching to a new offer – besides avoiding that price increase.

The more products you have, the greater the impact of Sky price increases will be on your monthly bills. And while millions of Sky customers are expected to see price increases of around £ 3 per month (£ 36 per year) on average, Sky has capped the increase at £ 6 per month (£ 72 per year).

The TV and broadband provider said only 8% of its customers will see the maximum price increase of £ 72 per year, with those who receive special discounts on their account being affected differently depending on their offering.

What can Sky customers do?

Ofcom regulations state that you are allowed to terminate your contract without penalty if your provider increases the subscription fees above what was agreed upon when the contract was signed.

If you contact Sky within 30 days of receiving notice of a price increase, you should not be charged any additional fees. However, Sky has included the following caveat in its terms and conditions:

  • Prices may increase and services may vary, including during the minimum duration. We will let you know of any material changes and your options before making them.

  • During your minimum term, Sky TV prices may increase by up to 10% every 12 months. These limits do not apply to other Sky services.
